Kitchen Remodel in Brentwood, Missouri | Open-Concept Design with Hidden Structural Beam

This Brentwood kitchen remodeling project transformed a traditional compartmentalized layout into a more modern and connected living space designed for everyday gathering and entertaining.

Like many homes in the area, the original floor plan separated the kitchen and dining room, limiting flow, natural light, and functionality. The homeowners wanted a more open-concept layout that would better support how their family uses the space today.

Opening the Kitchen with Structural Wall Removal

To modernize the layout, Aptitude Design & Build removed the load-bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room, creating a significantly larger and more connected living area.

Because the wall was structural, careful planning and engineering were required to safely redistribute the load from above. To maintain a clean and seamless appearance, the structural beam was concealed within the ceiling rather than left exposed.

This approach allowed the transition between rooms to feel natural and uninterrupted while preserving the structural integrity of the home.

The updated layout now provides:

Custom Design Features and Warm Material Selections

The renovation also included a custom built-in eating area designed to create what Aptitude Design & Build refers to as “a space within a space.” Rather than leaving the larger room feeling undefined, the built-in seating area helps create a more intimate gathering space within the open-concept layout.
