Kitchen Remodel in St. Louis
Kitchen Remodel in St. Louis | Vaulted Ceiling & Open-Concept Kitchen Design
The Donley family partnered with Aptitude Design & Build to remodel their kitchen with the goal of opening up the space, improving functionality, and creating a more modern and inviting atmosphere for everyday living and entertaining.
The original kitchen felt more enclosed and limited in both storage and gathering space. Through strategic structural changes and thoughtful design updates, Aptitude transformed the kitchen into a brighter, more open environment that better supports the family’s lifestyle.
Opening the Kitchen with Structural Changes
One of the most impactful parts of the renovation was the addition of a vaulted ceiling area, which dramatically changed the feel of the kitchen and helped create a greater sense of openness and height within the space.
To further improve flow and connectivity, Aptitude Design & Build removed walls that previously separated the kitchen from surrounding living areas. These structural modifications allowed the kitchen to feel more integrated with the rest of the home while improving sightlines and natural light throughout the space.
The renovation also included the addition of a new closet and a large kitchen island, significantly increasing both storage and functionality.
The updated layout now provides:
- Improved flow and circulation
- Better connection between living spaces
- Increased storage capacity
- Expanded seating and entertaining space
- More openness and natural light
A Large Island Designed for Gathering
The oversized kitchen island became one of the central features of the remodel, creating a natural gathering space for family meals, conversation, and entertaining.
The island helps anchor the kitchen while also improving prep space and overall usability within the room.
Warm Materials and Modern Design Details
One of Aptitude Design & Build’s favorite design combinations in the project is the pairing of dark gray tile with rich cherry wood finishes and decorative pendant lighting.
The contrast between the darker tile and the warmth of the cherry wood helps the kitchen feel modern and fresh while still maintaining a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.
The layered materials and lighting selections also add texture and depth, helping the kitchen feel more customized and visually balanced.
A Kitchen Designed for Family Living
The finished renovation transformed the kitchen into a more functional and connected part of the home — a space designed for gathering, entertaining, and everyday family life.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful structural changes, warm material selections, and carefully planned layouts can completely change the feel and functionality of a kitchen while creating a more open and inviting environment.
