Open Concept Kitchen Remodel in St. Louis
Modern Kitchen Remodel in St. Louis | Open-Concept Kitchen with Large Island
In this kitchen remodeling project, Aptitude Design & Build helped the homeowners transform a dark, closed-off kitchen into a brighter, more open space designed for entertaining and everyday living.
Having previously completed several renovations with this same home layout, the Aptitude team came into the project with a strong understanding of both the design opportunities and the structural considerations hidden behind the walls. That experience helped streamline the construction process while allowing for a smoother and more efficient renovation.
The homeowners’ primary goals were to create a lighter, more modern kitchen, incorporate a large island for gathering and entertaining, and add a dedicated bar area with open shelving for glassware and drinks.
The finished design successfully balances openness, functionality, and warmth while creating a kitchen that feels both spacious and welcoming.
A Large Island Designed for Gathering
One of the central features of the renovation is the oversized kitchen island, which anchors the entire space and provides generous room for cooking, serving, casual dining, and entertaining.
The island helps improve circulation throughout the kitchen while also creating a natural gathering point for family and guests.
Custom Bar Area with Floating Glass Shelving
The homeowners specifically wanted to incorporate a small bar area into the kitchen design, creating a dedicated space for drinks, glassware, and entertaining.
One of the standout details is the use of floating glass shelving, which adds a lighter and more refined visual element than traditional upper cabinetry. The open shelving helps maintain the airy feel of the kitchen while adding both function and character to the space.
Improved Layout and Kitchen Flow
As part of the renovation, the sink was relocated to a more central position that allows easier movement and conversation throughout the kitchen. This adjustment significantly improved the functionality of the space, especially during gatherings and day-to-day cooking.
The updated layout now supports:
- Better workflow throughout the kitchen
- Improved visibility and connection between spaces
- Increased prep and entertaining space
- More natural movement around the island
- Better use of the home’s overall footprint
Open Cabinetry and Vertical Design Elements
Glass-front upper cabinetry was incorporated to draw the eye upward and emphasize the height of the home’s ceilings. These details help the kitchen feel larger and more open while creating visual balance throughout the space.
Aptitude Design & Build carefully balanced aesthetics with practicality, ensuring each design element complemented both the proportions of the home and the homeowners’ lifestyle.
The result is a modern kitchen that feels bright, functional, and highly livable — equally suited for everyday routines and effortless entertaining.
